Cobbosseecontee’s Special Event
By Billy "Hawkeye" Decoteau / Download Application
For twenty-two years Lakeside Motel and Cabins has hosted one of Maine’s oldest and most prestigious Open Team Bass Tournaments on the shores of famed Lake Cobbosseecontee. Spawned in 1989 the Special Olympics Maine benefit tournament has been blessed with continuous support from a wide demographic of generous donations, framed with volunteers and monetary contributions.
“Since the beginning we have never lacked volunteers,” echoes Andy and Sheree Wess, founders of the event. Praising all of their dedicated individuals and groups, the Wess’s are quick to point out their relationship paired with enormous heartfelt contributions from Maine’s Federation of Bass Anglers. “Without Maine’s Bass Anglers this event would have disappeared years ago! Instead the growth has continued thanks to Maine’s B.A.S.S. Federation Nation organization as well as Maine’s FLW Outdoors TBF.” Maine’s B.A.S.S. Classic Bassmaster Club has taken the reins organizing the entire tournament day format from start to finish.
Team Entry Fees are $125.00 for the one-day May 2nd 2010 tournament. According to the Classic Bassmaster Club, $25.00 of the Entry Fee goes directly to Maine’s Special Olympic programs, while 100% of the balance ($100.00/ Team) is distributed in payouts to the participating teams. Additionally, volunteers offer all anglers a morning breakfast and afternoon lunch, with 100% of the donations going to Special Olympics Maine.
Since it’s inception the Special Olympics Maine Team Benefit Bass Tournament on Lake Cobbosseecontee paired with it’s generous sponsors donations, has raised approximately $100 K. These monetary donations have been a catalyst encouraging Maine’s Special Olympians to annually participate in a wide variety of sporting activities. Some examples from 2009 include; 270 Olympians running Track and Field events, 37 Olympians mounting saddles within the Equestrian Olympics, while 200 of Maine’s Special Olympians participated in Olympic Bowling.
To attain additional information on becoming a sponsor or to participate in the 22nd Annual May 1nd 2011 Special Olympics Maine Team Bass Tournament, contact Andy or Sheree Wess at 1-800-532-6892 or email Info@LakesideLodging.com
