What exactly is a bass club and what do they do?
- A bass club is an organized group of bass fishing enthusiast looking to help one another in becoming more knowledgeable in the sport of bass fishing. Not only do the clubs fish club and open tournaments but the clubs participate in area youth functions such as casting kids competitions, kids derbies or just about anything that includes kids. Bass clubs are also involved in local conservation efforts ranging from lake shore clean ups to putting rip rap on the banks of lake shore property to preserve them from further harm done by erosion. Maine Bass clubs are actively involved in the Milfoil issues here in Maine too.
Do I have to own a boat to be a member of a bass club?
- No. Most clubs operate on a boater to non boater ratio. Many clubs are usually short on the non boater memberships. Never hesitate to join a club if you don't have a boat.
Do you fish with the same person all year in bass clubs?
- Yes and No. Some clubs prefer a team pairing all year but most prefer to pair anglers with different anglers for each tournament. Most of this is done by a draw either before each tournament or at the beginning of the year.
I have never bass fished before, will joining a club be beneficial to me?
- Yes indeed! Bass clubs have a friendly atmosphere and there are always experienced anglers willing to help others get into the sport and help them to become better anglers.
Is there a membership fee to join a club?
- Yes. All MBFN clubs belong to the B.A.S.S. (Bass Anglers Sportsman Society) and pay National Federation dues to them in order to be able to qualify for B.A.S.S. sanctioned events. The Maine B.A.S.S. Federation Nation's organization has annual dues as well. However each club sets there own dues and they should be about $40 on average.
How old do I have to be to join a club?
- Most clubs suggest 16 and older however some clubs accept junior members from 12 - 15 years old. Some clubs now sponsor a junior club too where youths as young as 7 and as old as 17 can join.
