Jon Stewart, Travis Mills speak at Annual Awards Banquet

Banquet Photos

Jon Stewart, Director of B.A.S.S. Nation, spoke at the Maine B.A.S.S. Nation Awards Banquet. Jon spoke of his passion for his career with B.A.S.S. and how he ended up where he is today. Jon also spoke of how successful the High School program has been.

Travis Mills, www.travismills.org/foundation of the 82nd Airborne is a wounded warrior, motivational speaker, actor, and an advocate for veterans and amputees. Travis spoke about his foundation, and his background while keeping the guest laughing.

Several others spoke to the crowd of 100 plus. Maine B.A.S.S. Nation member Jason Kervin of Androscoggin Bassmasters summed the evening up best when he said "It will never cease to amaze me how GREAT the people are involved in bass fishing. Our Maine BASS Nation banquet tonight was filled with moving gestures. The money they raise for charities, the volunteer work, and giving to others whenever they see an opportunity, is a vivid reminder that there are still amazing people in the world! There are WAY too many individuals to list, but they exemplify generosity and appreciation for the rest of us to follow. The selflessness these people show, make me want to be a better person, and I'm incredibly proud to be a part of it. Whatever fishing may have in-store for me, I'll never forget what this sport is all about, and the integrity that it's participants stand for."

Several raffles were donated by sponsors, members and local businesses, thanks for your support.

Smallmouth bass of 3-4 lbs were common with a few 5's and a couple that reached six! The bass were mostly caught by dragging tubes, or drop shotting in depths of 25-45'. The Maine team caught a bunch of fish during the week and ended the tournament 9th place overall.

Chuck Towns, added 15-9 with his 15-3 Day 1 weight to give him over a 4lb lead on the Maine team with 30-12 after 2 days. Towns knew he had Maine angler George Cooper looking to take over the Maine lead on day 3. However, Towns kept up his pace and finished strong on day 3 with 11-1, that bag gave Towns a 3 day total of 41-13 earning him a spot in the 2014 Old Milwaukee B.A.S.S. Nation Championship Ouachita River, Monroe, Louisiana on Nov. 6-8, 2014. Towns said he was excited to move on to the Championship. Congrats Chuck and good luck at the Championship, Maine's rooting for you!

After leading the Maine Team on Day 1 with 5 bass for 15-4, George Cooper said "his fish shrank in size a little" on Day 2 and they shrank a little more on day 3. Cooper's 3 day weight of 37-1 was good enough for 2nd place on the Maine team, eliminating his chance for another trip the Nationals.

Joe Holland after a slight struggle on day 1 and 2 redeemed himself on day 3 with 17-5 to give him a 3 day total of 32-15 and 3rd place on the Maine team.

Dwayne Turnage ended the tournament with 31-5, good enough for 4th place on the Maine team. Turnage had a rough day 1 but came back strong on day 2 and 3.

Kevin Busch weighed in a 14-4 bag on day 3 after removing a hook that was lodged in his palm on day 2, see photo on day 2 weigh in on bassmaster.com. Busch ended the tournament with 31-3. Busch finished in 5th place for the Maine team.

Scott Guimond had two big consistent days to start the event unfortunately day 3 was a lot slower. Guimond netted just 2 bass on day 3 which gave him a 3 day total of 29-0. That weight gave Guimond a 6th place finish on the Maine team.

After a good start on day 1 Mark Lodge fell a bit on day 2 but came back strong on day 3 with 10-5 to give him a 3 day total of 27-14, earning him 7th place on the Maine team.

Steve Wilson, Maine B.A.S.S. Nation President who was very consistent on day 1 and 2 was just looking for a ten pound bag on day 3. Wilson known as a very good shallow largemouth angler was a little short on what he wanted, but squeaked out just 5-4 on day 3 giving him a 3 day total of 23-15 good enough for 8th place on the Maine team. Although Wilsons fish were not as big as he wanted he did an excellent job on stage thanking all the sponsors, tournament hosts and many more on a job well done.

Scott Barker had a down and up day to start the event and day 3 he weighed in just 2 bass for 5-3 for a 3 day total of 20-15. That weight put him in 9th place on the Maine team.

Windham Christian Academy Daniel Rodgers & Alex Williamson had a slow day 1 and managed 1 bass for 3-3. Day 2 saw the high school team come back huge with a 14-13 bag for a 2 day total of 18-0. The team culled 3 or 4 times and caught most of their fish on 1 spot which was a small eddy. The teams coach was Maine team member, Dave Reiss. Their weight puts them in 10th place on the team.

John Grondin had a tough first 2 days but finished strong on day 3 with 9-1, giving Grondin a 3 day total of 14-9 which gave him a 11th place finish for the Maine team.

Scott Laliberty weighed in 1-4 and 11-12 for a 3 day total of 12-6, earning him 12th place for Maine team.

Also attending the event was Maine team member and 2nd alternate Keith Poulin.

Another highlight on day 3 was when Javier Guillen of Spain proposed to Victoria(Spains Interpretor) on stage after having her pull out an engagement ring from a bag of soft plastics, Victoria gave him a huge hug so we can assume the wedding is in the works!

Glen Bruce, Maine State Champion

Day 1&2 Standings l Photos

Glen Bruce of Rocky Coast is the Maine Champion with 10 bass weighing 27.41. Day 1 big smallmouth, 4.41 was caught by Jed Harris of Knox County Bassmasters. Toby Cross of Classic Bassmasters has the Day 1 Big largemouth, that bass weighed 4.06. The average sized bass of all fish caught today was 1.98. Day 2 smallmouth lunker Glen Bruce 4.02. Day 2 largemouth lunker Bob Smith of Classic 3.84.

Over 100 anglers competed in the two day event.

The slow moving stretch of the Androscoggin should produce a number of limit sized bass for all with a chance at a few 5 bass limits that may reach weights up to 15 lbs. The average 5 bass limits should be around 10-12 lbs.

The 2 day event will send Maine's top anglers to the B.A.S.S. Nation Eastern Divisional on the Connecticut River in Hartford, CT. More info
